Funeral Mass & Reception for Brother Martin McDonald

A graduate of the Royal Military College of Canada (Victoria, BC, Kingston, ON), Martin continued his education by earning a Bachelor of Laws (with Distinction) from the University of Saskatchewan.
His life was marked by a commitment to public service and a passion for both intellectual and physical pursuits, evident in his participation in football, rugby and skiing. Excelling in his career, he was renowned for his hard work and determination.
A dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus since 2005, Martin’s exceptional leadership significantly impacted the Order.
He served two terms as Grand Knight of Monsignor Doyle Council 1186 (2008-2009 and 2010-2011), and held key positions including Deputy Grand Knight (2006-2007 and 2007-2008), Chancellor (2011-2012 and 2012-2013), Program Director (2006-2011), Faith Director (2014), Council Director (2006-2008), Youth Director (2007-2008 and 2017-2018) and First, Second and Third Year Trustee (2022, 2023, 2024).
At the State level, he served as District Deputy for three terms (2015-2016, 2016-2017, and 2017-2018) and was a longtime Calgary Chapter Secretary.
His passion for the Order was evident in his role as Team Captain for the Third Degree Exemplification Team and his significant contributions to State Conventions planning, special membership committees and the annual Chapter Padre Night event.
A well-known and active member of the Sacred Heart parish community, Martin served as a lector, bringing the Word to life for countless parishioners, and contributed in various other capacities.
His genuine smile and engaging personality made him a memorable presence.
Renowned for his sharp intellect, charismatic personality, and commanding stature, Brother Martin will be profoundly missed by the Knights of Columbus and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Knights of Columbus Honor Guard will accompany Brother Martin on his final journey.
The Funeral Mass, to be celebrated by the Reverend Father Arjay Abanto, (1186 Council Chaplain) will take place on Friday, August 9th, 2024, at 2:00 pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1307 14th St, SW Calgary.
A reception will follow, with burial at Saint Mary’s Cemetery.
