August Pancake Breakfast

On Sunday, August 17, 2025, the Knights of Columbus hosted a Pancake Breakfast after the 9 and 11 am Masses at Sacred Heart Church and in the Sacred Heart Elementary school playground. Calgary’s sunny skies and warm temperatures, reaching 24.9 °C (77 °F), made for a perfect morning outdoors. Parishioners and guests enjoyed pancakes and coffee while connecting with friends and neighbors in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.  Approximately 350 people were served.

The breakfast was a true team effort of 23 Knights. Brother Lorne Gartner played a pivotal role, securing all supplies, preparing the batter, and keeping the kitchen and service areas organized. Brother Leslie Trainor coordinated logistics and supported every aspect of the event, ensuring everything ran smoothly from start to finish. Brother Cryztof Lopianowski managed table setup and takedown, providing critical support that helped the entire event flow seamlessly.

Brother Sijo Abraham got the cooking started, and SK Sasha Chitrenky handled pancakes throughout the morning. SK John Bothwell, Brothers Shibu Antony, and Sheldon Farrar assisted wherever needed. SK Stephen Sheridan managed hospitality and encouraged donations, while Brother Franklyn Ugochukwu assisted with serving. Several Brothers, including Jim Delay, Hany Farag, SK Roy Ifill, SK Wayne Gerylo, Al Kohlman, John Leahy, Robert Perrin, Jason Widmeyer and Tom Shannon, mingled with guests and represented the Knights, helping everyone feel welcome.  Brother Jim’s sons James and Josh assisted with the event teardown.

Our clergy and special guests added to the day’s warmth. Fr. Arjay and Fr. Terry Connolly were present, and Fr. Mario Basque attended with his trademark good humor, laughter, and cheer, engaging warmly with parishioners.

Special thanks to SK Dave Onysyk from Fr. Joe Toole Council, who attended the event along with Lady Debbie and loaned the pancake-making equipment that made the breakfast possible.

Generous donations collected during the breakfast will go directly to support the charitable work of the Knights of Columbus, funding programs that assist those in need and strengthen parish life.

The Pancake Breakfast was more than a meal. It was a chance to come together as a parish community, share in fellowship, and see firsthand the impact of the Knights’ mission in action. Thanks to everyone who attended and to all the Brother Knights, SKs, and clergy whose dedication made the morning a success.
