DESCRIPTION:We mourn the loss of Brother Knight\, Martin John McDonald\, who passed away June 29th\, 2024 at the age of 73.\n\nA graduate of the Royal Military College of Canada (Victoria\, BC\, Kingston\, ON)\, Martin continued his education by earning a Bachelor of Laws (with Distinction) from the University of Saskatchewan.\nHis life was marked by a commitment to public service and a passion for both intellectual and physical pursuits\, evident in his participation in football\, rugby and skiing. Excelling in his career\, he was renowned for his hard work and determination. \nA dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus since 2005\, Martin’s exceptional leadership significantly impacted the Order.\nHe served two terms as Grand Knight of Monsignor Doyle Council 1186 (2008-2009 and 2010-2011)\, and held key positions including Deputy Grand Knight (2006-2007 and 2007-2008)\, Chancellor (2011-2012 and 2012-2013)\, Program Director (2006-2011)\, Faith Director (2014)\, Council Director (2006-2008)\, Youth Director (2007-2008 and 2017-2018) and First\, Second and Third Year Trustee (2022\, 2023\, 2024). \nAt the State level\, he served as District Deputy for three terms (2015-2016\, 2016-2017\, and 2017-2018) and was a longtime Calgary Chapter Secretary.\nHis passion for the Order was evident in his role as Team Captain for the Third Degree Exemplification Team and his significant contributions to State Conventions planning\, special membership committees and the annual Chapter Padre Night event. \nA well-known and active member of the Sacred Heart parish community\, Martin served as a lector\, bringing the Word to life for countless parishioners\, and contributed in various other capacities.\nHis genuine smile and engaging personality made him a memorable presence. \nRenowned for his sharp intellect\, charismatic personality\, and commanding stature\, Brother Martin will be profoundly missed by the Knights of Columbus and all who had the privilege of knowing him. \nA Knights of Columbus Honor Guard will accompany Brother Martin on his final journey. \nThe Funeral Mass\, to be celebrated by the Reverend Father Arjay Abanto\, (1186 Council Chaplain) will take place on Friday\, August 9th\, 2024\, at 2:00 pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church\, 1307 14th St\, SW Calgary.\nA reception will follow\, with burial at Saint Mary’s Cemetery. \nTempus fugit. We need your participation. \nFeed The Hungry: Need-to-Know\n\nWeekly Sunday Lunch: Serves hot meals to Calgarians facing food insecurity.\nGuests: 350-500 people dine-in or take-out each week.\nVolunteers: 75 needed per Sunday.\nLocation: St. Mary’s Hall (221-18th Ave. SW).\nAll Ages Welcome: Under 12s need adult supervision.\nShifts: Set-up (11am-12:30pm)\, Serving (12:30-4pm).\nParking: Behind hall\, church lot\, or St. Monica’s lot.\nVolunteer Entry: East side entrance.\nDress Code: Comfortable\, conservative\, closed-toe shoes. DESCRIPTION:Third COR meeting – April 27th\n12:30- 2:30 – Housey Hall\nWith hearts full of reverence\, we invite you to a profound exploration of faith at the third COR meeting this coming Saturday\, April 27th from 12:30-2:30 in the Lower Hall.\nAs we gather in the spirit of our core Columbian values – Charity\, Unity\, Fraternity\, and Patriotism – we will embark on a prayerful journey through the Gospel of John 15:1-8\, the designated reading for the Fifth Sunday of Easter. \nThis beautiful passage invites us to consider the profound analogy of the True Vine. Here\, Christ is presented as the very source of life and spiritual nourishment\, and we\, His disciples\, are likened to branches dependent on Him for growth\, strength\, and the ability to bear fruit. Through the time-honored practice of Lectio Divina\, we will contemplate this symbolism\, drawing profound insights to nourish our faith and deepen our relationship with Christ. \nIn answering the Holy Spirit’s call\, we are reminded that our core identity lies in following Christ.\nThrough Lectio Divina\, we will explore how this metaphor of the True Vine resonates deeply with this foundation\, offering us profound insights to guide our service to others. \n\nUnity in Christ: Just as branches on a vine are unified by the lifeblood of the living vine\, drawing sustenance from the same source\, we\, bound together as Knights of Columbus by our faith in Christ\, are further united in this shared foundation. Through Lectio Divina\, we will explore how this deeper unity strengthens our Christian fellowship and allows us to better serve our communities as instruments of God’s love.\nCharity through Christ’s Love: As the vine nourishes the branches for fruitfulness\, Christ’s love empowers us to bear good fruit through charitable works. This reflection will inspire us to live out our core value of Charity with renewed purpose.\nStrength in Faith: A branch draws strength from the vine to weather storms. By deepening our understanding of Christ’s teachings\, we will be better equipped to face challenges and uphold our faith with unwavering strength.\n\nThis sacred exploration promises not only personal enrichment but also a deeper bond within our COR community. Through shared prayer\, reflection\, and open dialogue\, we will be nourished by the Holy Spirit and grow closer to Christ and one another. \nNo prior experience with Lectio Divina is required.\nCome with a spirit of reverence and a desire to be rooted more deeply in Christ alongside your brother Knights.
